Black Sand Beaches
When people think of the beach they generally picture soft white sand as far as the eye can see. I was surprised on our first visit to both the Icleandic beaches and the beach here in Japan to find that there wasn't white sand. While the sand here in Japan is darker, some even call it black sand, but having lived in Iceland and seen true black beaches I wouldn't quite call it black. One of the downsides to the dark sand beaches is that they are much hotter if walked on in bare feet. In Iceland you don't walk on them with bare feet because it's cold there! Here you can during the summer months. I've included pictures of both the beaches here in Japan and in Iceland so you can compare the black sand beaches. Truthfully I love the black sand beaches because they aren't the 'norm.' From my understanding the beaches are black due to volcanic rock which would be expected why they are so black in Iceland, I was surprised to find them here.
